Before we get to the details, we want to make our views on open carry very clear.
We believe it's a bad idea because:
- You lose a tactical advantage
- You may cause alarm to the general public
- You may violate a local ordinance and find yourself under arrest
So, now lets cover some of the statutes that apply to open carry.
29-11.7-104. Regulation - carrying - posting
"A local government may enact an ordinance, regulation, or other law that prohibits the open carrying of a firearm in a building or specific area within the local government's jurisdiction. If a local government enacts an ordinance, regulation, or other law that prohibits the open carrying of a firearm in a building or specific area, the local government shall post signs at the public entrances to the building or specific area informing persons that the open carrying of firearms is prohibited in the building or specific area."
In simple terms any city can enact local ordinances to prohibit the open carry of firearms anywhere within its jurisdiction. If they choose to do so, they must post signage to that effect. The law doesn't say anything in great detail about the signs so you could easily carry into a restricted area having missed a sign.
